Table of Planets
Each row in the table is dedicated to an individual planet. Some star systems have more than one planet. One of those systems has four planets. In the table, star systems are sorted by distance from Sol. But first, a description of the column headings.

  • Star Namename of the star (Flamsteed-Bayer, HD, DM, HIP, or Gliese number).
  • SpTypespectral type of the star.
  • Distdistance in parsecs.
  • Age — estimated age of the star system in giga-years (109 years).
  • Fe/Hiron content of the star.
  • Planet — letter designation given to the planet in order of discovery.
  • M sin iMass (in Jupiters) times the sine of orbital inclination (usually unknown, or only estimated). The inclination of the orbit to the line of sight can be anywhere between zero and ninety degrees, thus the sine of inclination will be between zero and one. Therefore, the mass shown is a lower limit for the planet. With an inclination approaching zero, the calculated mass would tend to approach infinity. Other factors make this an unlikely prospect. For one, beyond a certain mass, the body would not be a planet, but a star.
  • SMAxis — semi-major axis of planet's orbit about its sun, measured in astronomical units.
  • Period — period of orbit in days (unless otherwise labelled as years).
  • Ecc — eccentricity of planet's orbit (a number between zero and one, with zero indicating a perfectly circular orbit).
Star names that are listed in bold lead to details and graphics about the planetary system, including the regions where Earth-like worlds might be found. Simply click on the star name. For a 3D view of all the stars within the Solar neighborhood known to have planets, click here.
