Humans have been naming stars likely from long before the beginnings of history. Today, many of the brightest stars have names that come to us from the Arabs — names like, Achernar, Aldebaran, Betelgeuse, Markab, and Thuban. All of the "naked eye" stars have multiple identities. For instance, Sheliak is also known as "10 Beta Lyrae" (Flamsteed-Bayer), or "HR 7106" (Yale Bright Star Catalogue). See catalogs for more information.
