Gliese 876
Hover mouse cursor over each image to turn on its star labels.
Gliese 876 is very close on the galactic scale, yet it is nearly invisible in our night skies. Our sun (Sol), Tau Ceti, and Fomalhaut are close enough to Gliese 876 that they are labelled here and in the next view. |
|

Scale = 16 parsecs.
Gliese 876 is highlighted by the green "focus" marker.
Our own sun is located at the white diamond.

In this view, all of the neighboring red dwarfs are "turned on" so their relative positions are made visible. Here the sides of the "viewing cube" are 8 parsecs (26.1 light years) long. It would take light, traveling at 186,000 miles per second, over a quarter century to travel along one edge, from corner to corner.
The next 3D view (below the following table) zooms in even farther to the 4-parsec scale.

Next-Door Neighbors: Gliese 876
The following table is a list of Gliese 876's next-door neighbors. After the star's name, the distance from Gliese 876 is given in parsecs. This is followed by the distance from Sol (our sun), the Spectral Type, Visual Magnitude, and number of stars in the system. The Spectral Type and Visual Magnitude are given for the primary star, if there are more than one in the system. The magnitudes given are those of the stars as seen from Gliese 876.

At the 4-parsec scale, the closest neighbors of our subject star are all red dwarfs except the white dwarf — "degenerate" star — van Maanen 2. Of these, only Lacaille 9352 would be visible to the unaided eye.
