Out of the dimness of his hunter-gatherer past, man has assembled the resources to fashion the mother of all institutions civilization. Five regions of the world have given birth to civilization; three gave rise to writing and possibly a fourth. Click on any of the five regions below to learn more.
The timeline below shows the relationships between key historical events. The Younger Dryas was the last major cold spell (1,300 years long) of the most recent Ice Age. Plato's Atlantis is an as yet unproven, mythical, large island which supposedly sank in a day and a night. Göbekli Tepe is a site in Turkey with structures, carvings and artwork. Of all the cradles of civilization, Ancient Mesopotamia is arguably the cradle of cradles, and birthplace of western civilization, for there we see the earliest writing the foundation of history. Jared Diamond in his award-winning bestseller, Guns, Germs and Steel, suggested the idea that passive elements of geography and nature affected the development of civilization. Such passive elements may have played a major role in determining who succeeded and who did not. Yet, there is one element Diamond did not consider. What if civilization were given a head start by those who had prior knowledge of its possibility? What if the children of an earlier civilization gave birth to civilization as we know it, simply because they knew it could be done?
Atlantis is one of the most enduring myths. A space shuttle was named after it, and numerous movies and television shows have tapped into its allure. But what if Atlantis were more than myth? Not only do we have proof that an Atlantis-like event occurred right when Plato says the event happened, but we also have evidence from several other disciplines which suggest the likelihood of Atlantis. These fields of science include, geology, oceanography, paleo-climatology, archaeology, geology, linguistics and genetics.
